Fly Cruise versus Cruise From the UK

So you’ve made the big decision, you’re going to break away at Christmas and take your loved ones on a fantastic cruise. It will be a wonderful way to spend your big holiday of the year – everything is done for you. No need to cook. No need to even think about the car, or the state of the roads. Your biggest decision is where to go and then how to get there.

If you are going to the Baltic, or perhaps visiting the fjords, to get a Christmas card feeling for a very special festive time then cruising out of a UK port is easy and you’ll be part way to your first destination before you have even unpacked all your bags. However if you are travelling further afield, perhaps in search of the sun, then you might want to consider flying to a port nearer your destinations so that you spend more time in the warmer climes that will make such a lovely change from home at this time of year.

The decision will depend somewhat on how long your have available for your trip. On a shorter cruise, say a week in the South Pacific, you are not going to want to spend a couple of days getting there, no matter how good the ship is. However if you have a fortnight and your trip is to the Red Sea and Egypt then the choice opens up a little.

I have taken many cruises and I just can’t wait to board – I’m happy no matter where I start from, but having said that I still have my definite favourite. I do like the sun, there’s nothing that beats the sun glinting off the sea, seen from the amazing luxury liner that will be your hotel for the length of your trip. I like to cruise from the UK, usually Southampton, and then quickly move from chilly Britain down towards the sun. Whether it’s just to the Canaries, or further afield, those days of sailing quickly south are so special. Then if I can I like to fly home, I don’t want to be gradually reconditioned to the British climate! Though of course that’s not always possible.

So what will your trip be? The Eastern European Christmas Markets? Luxor and the Nile? Or will you really blow the budget and go down under to Australia and New Zealand this Christmas? If you have the luxury to cruise to sun then I’d recommend it, but not all of us are lucky enough to have the time to spare. No matter. I’m sure you’ll have an amazing time.
